The individual student consultation consists of a series of meetings with opportunities for in-school support as per the needs and preferences of the school and availability of the Consultant. Each meeting has a unique purpose to support the consultation process and follows an evidence-based problem-solving consultation model (e.g., Erchul 2016; Feldman & Kratochwill, 2006). The meetings include opportunities for relationship-building and understanding of systems level context, problem identification, problem analysis, intervention development and program evaluation.

The goal of POPARD’s consultation model is to work with the team to develop a manageable action plan that can be implemented with local support. POPARD is committed to helping school teams implement the plans they co-develop and may involve the POPARD consultant providing support to the school team to effectively and accurately implement the selected strategies.

POPARD uses an empowerment model of consultation

POPARD’s model of consultation includes:

Problem Identification Interview

Purpose: Begin to lead the team through a problem-solving model that builds their capacity to identify environmental, contextual, and other variables that can be altered, to improve the situation.

Analysis and Action Plan

Purpose: To continue to lead the team through problem solving by analyzing and further identifying variables to consider that inform the collaborative development of the action plan.

Progress Monitoring

Purpose: To help the team understand the importance of treatment fidelity/integrity in the success of the plan, to measure it and adjust the plan as needed to strengthen it. A minimum of 2 progress monitoring meetings is expected per individual student consult.

Implementation Support

Purpose: To provide individualized support to the teacher for the implementation of strategies to address the priority focus.

School Transfer Plan Meeting

Purpose: To prepare the now more capable school team to independently continue implementation of strategies and monitor progress related to the priority concern.

If required, POPARD’s extended consultation allows for more intensive focus on a student and school team, and immediate coaching over two or three consecutive days.
